CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW
Beloved captain of the Black Pearl from Disney's 2003 film "Pirates of the Carribean", Jack Sparrow puts a delightful twist on the traditional pirate costume. Played by Johnny Depp, the character is lively and fun and a treat to play for a day.

To accurately portray this easy-going pirate be sure to practice the signature
swagger. When asked about his walk in an interview Johnny Depp revealed that he had come up with the walk by studying a drunken gay guy.

For added detail you can try learning to swordfight. There are several books available on the topic and can make the costume a whole lot of fun.

COSTUME NOTES

Puffy Shirt: We acquired an extra large men's dress shirt from a discount clothing store and hand gathered the sleeve tops and cuffs. To give the aged look we soaked our shirt in a pot of tea.

Brown wool vest: A vest is a simple thing to make so we made our own pattern using newspaper and drawing on the back the shape that we wanted.

Knickers: These can easily be made by cutting the bottoms off some worn out dress pants and rollin up the cuffs

Bandana: The reddish brown bandana actually has a subtle pattern but we figured that anything in a similar color would do.

Leather Tricorn Hat: The hat is not worn all of the time in the film so you can leave it off if you dont want to go to the expense of buying one. I would bet that it wouldnt be too difficult to make one for an ambitious costumer.

Swashbuckler Boots: In the film he is wearing a brown suede boot that is pretty soiled and worn. To get a similar effect we went to the fabric store and picked up some brown microsuede which is easy to work with because it doesnt require any sewing. We bought some leather lacing from the craft store and fabricated a boot top to wear over some inexpensive brown suede slippers. If you wrap the boot top around your leg and lace up the back you get a pretty reasonable facsimile of the boot for a fraction of the cost. If you want to make your own you can scale the pattern to suit your needs:

Pistol

Compass (that always points south)

Hair: Slightly dreadlocked shoulder length brown hair that is beaded and contains some sort of long bone. We used a Jesus wig, link below.

The facial hair is a goatee style the has two points. Plan to start growing the facial hair at least a month in advance if you don't want to do the fake bearde route.

Jacket: This is a wool peacoat style that is fitted at the waist and slit at the hips with toggle buttons and the wide cuffs.
